It's right before the holidays, and we're excited to announce a few new features from our team.

November and December went by in a flash. All the while we've been hard at work making Recommended Systems a better experience. This includes quality of life improvements and building some of the capabilities that we've missing.

One of those is email monitoring. We tested an early version during Black Friday and it came in very useful for monitoring and comparing the promotions our competitors were running. Having passed the bar during peak email season, we're now launching it for everyone.

But enough lead in. What are the updates?

New Updates

Launching "Email Monitoring"

It's still in early iterations, but we're excited to announce the launch of our email monitoring tool.

It's super simple to get started with it:

• Go to any individual Competitors page and you'll find a unique email address.
• Click to copy that email, and then use that to sign up for that compatitor's newsletter or mailing list.
• Whenever an email comes in, you'll see it show up in the Email Monitor section, as well as on the homepage and competitor's page. You can click into the email to see what its all about, and we're working on adding flags and annotations as well.
• Sometimes an email list will ask you to confirm your address. Just go to the Email Overview and if you see that email come in, click to open it and confirm your registration.

It's that simple!

Simplified Navigation

One interesting thing we recently noticed is that our feature branding wasn't resonating. When we talked about a feature with it's "name", it led to confusion. When we talked about a feature by its purpose, it would instantly click for folks.

So we took that to heart and renamed some of our core capabilities. You'll notice the new sidebar contains Competitors (formerly Org Manager), Web Monitor (formerly Radar), Email Monitor (we were going to give it a fancy name but didn't get around to it), Battle Cards, and Notes. You might see this terminology continue to evolve and match the way customers speak about the features.

We also noticed that as the competitors and capabilities added up, the sidebar could grow to be a bit unwieldy. So we've added click-to-expand functionality as a small quality of life improvement.

Bug Fixes and More

• Fixed a bug on new battle card creation where it wouldn't load new cards until you refreshed the page
• Updated competitors to load in alphabetical order in the sidebar
• Replaced .svg icons with font icons across multiple pages to reduce page load times
• Removed note labels from the homepage for a cleaner, more streamlined experience
• Fixed the formatting for tables to not hide overflowing content

Most of October was spent in research and interviewing mode, which meant more learning and less feature development. I had the chance to speak with a few competitive research teams, customer success leaders, marketing agencies, and product strategists. Thank you, everyone who chatted with me!

The overarching theme was "simplification". Most people are focused on solving specific, well-constrained problems in their day-to-day. They value solutions to those problems and often don't have the bandwidth (or interest) in deviating too far from that area to explore other opportunities. Sometimes, it's because there's no reward in the exploration, only costs and learning curves. Other times it's because those challenges fall outside of their area of ownership. On calls that veered into sales/pitching territory, I observed that people are interested only in a subset of features and capabilities related to their own work - that's where they ask the most detailed questions and where they project their own use cases.

Outside of that, I've also been dogfooding Recommended Systems, which has been illustrative as to where friction exists, where certain pre-set limits don't make sense, and where the real value and problem-solving comes from.

When I started Recommended Systems, the vision and roadmap stemmed from what I saw and needed as a founder and entrepreneur, solving many related but not necessarily overlapping problems. Those are all still valuable problems to solve! But these conversations have exposed the need to simplify and focus on overlapping capabilities and well-defined problems first, with any focus on expansion a distant second.

So in the spirit of iterative development and being responsive to new information, I'm focusing more on well-coordinated features that resonate with well-defined problems and areas of ownership. I'm particularly doubling down on expanding the competitive monitoring and sales enablement capabilities, which I'll talk about below the fold. You may have also seen our homepage get updated in response to this, and anyone logging in this week will see some of the features/designs that were present earlier start to get removed or reoriented.

New Features

Battlecards: Compare Cards

Battlecards take a bit of time to fill out, but once you do that they end up being extremely useful! As the cofounder of Dragon Blood Balm, I've been doing more sales and outreach to climbing gyms and outdoor/sports-specialty stores. More than once, I've had a location ask me, "what's the difference between you and [x]?"

With Battlecards comparisons, this becomes really easy to do. You can compare your information section by section to see where you stack up, where the similarities start, and where they end. I've started using this for sales calls as well and it's been helpful to have the information readily available.

Comparison charts are something that you find a lot of websites and B2B businesses making as well, and my goal is to be able to leverage this for some of those deliverables as well.

Battlecards: Template Editor

In addition to getting more mileage out of battlecards, I've learned that different products and different businesses need different kinds of fields. So I'm excited to finally roll out the Battlecards Template Editor, allowing you to add as many fields as you need. The new field editor is already live, and adding new fields will automatically add them to existing battlecards as well.

I'm also starting to experiment with better onboarding and help-text designs, starting here at the template editor.

In the Pipeline

As mentioned in the beginning, October was more research, less development. But that doesn't mean that exciting things aren't happening. Just the opposite. I'm excited to say that there are a few highly-requested features coming in the next few weeks and months:

• Better weekly alerts
• Updated plan limits (removing org limits)
• New onboarding features
• Best practice guides for maximum value

One of the key elements of creating great products is listening to customers and users. So this round of updates is all about usability and interface enhancements that we noticed when partnering with you to see how you explore the app.

New Sidebar Design & Homepage:

Firstly, we've revamped the sidebar design! We wanted to make it clearer and easier to understand what each capability was far, and when you'd want to explore it.

So Radar and Battlecards are now grouped under "Competition", while Notes and Iceberg services are grouped under "Insights".

We've also created a "overview" of your activity on the main page. The homepage is where you should be able to see all of your most relevant and recent information in one glance, and we're excited to explore this further!

Notes: Expanded Functionality

We've expanded the Notes capabilities to have their own dedicated page. Now you can see all of your notes by type, and filter them by organization as well.

Next up, you'll be able to turn your tasks-related notes into actual to-dos for the team, and pin certain notes to the top of a column so that they don't get lost.

Radar: Add Notes Directly to Page Scans

Requested by quite a few people, you can now add notes directly to a scanned page. This makes it easier to jot down thoughts and tasks when you're reviewing the data. And, when these notes show up in the larger collection of notes, you'll be able to see what company and page it was referencing, and jump directly to it. We're still exploring the best design for this, as well as annotating the scans themselves. Hang tight!

We've also made it easier to add a page to monitor directly from the Radar overview page. Just click on the yellow "Monitor a new page" button to get started:

New Plan Limits!

As we talked with everyone, we quickly learned that most companies are looking at 5-10 competitors in their space. Our lowest tier was at 5 competitors and everyone felt like they were only monitoring a fraction of their market. So we've changed up the options to make it more in line with how a company thinks about their markets. Our new plans start at 10 competitors on the starter and trial tiers:

We're also excited to announce that we're opening our Beta to everyone! If you're interested in signing up, just go to our homepage and click on the "Create a Free Account" button. We're keeping our plans free while in still in Beta, so take advantage of it while it lasts!

What Is Recommended.Systems?

Recommended.Systems is a platform that helps companies be more competitive. That's a little bit abstract and unhelpful, so let's unpack that.

We see competitiveness as based on three things. As a business...

• ... how good are you at meeting your customer’s needs?
• ... how well positioned are you against your competition and the marketplace?
• ... how good are you at making fast decisions and then iterating based on feedback & customer signals?

We've found that successful businesses are good at all three of those things. They are good at meeting customer needs, understanding where they fit in and who they're up against, and are able to quickly iterate to a solution for any challenge.

Of course, that's easier said than done.

So how do you help companies become more competitive?

Recommended Systems is a unified platform for tools, automation, and insights that address each of those aspects of "competitiveness":

• We're tying it all together with insights in the form of limited-scope consulting. These are short engagements to solve well-defined problems.
  
  These insights are a combination of workshops and deliverables that help businesses tackle problems without any additional hiring or huge consulting contracts. By limiting the scope of work, we can create predictable pricing, timelines, and deliverables. This makes consultative support more accessible for more businesses.

So... what do I get?

We're starting small, but our vision is big. We're launching with a few key features, starting with upending sales and marketing-focused work:

• Radar is our tool for competitive monitoring. This allows you to monitor your competitor's pages: pricing pages, blogs, feature pages, search results, and more. Each week, you'll get an email digest of updates and changes that we identify.
• Battlecards is our tool for organizing key information about your competitors. Our cards are designed to inform your marketing campaigns, create talking points for your sales team, guide product road maps, and support investor decks.
• Notes are our way of bridging information and action. This allows you to create to-dos, share insights, and make notes to self, and call out interesting things for your team to follow up on.
• We're launching Insights with two initial services: Usability Testing, and Competitive Review. Usability Testing is a way for you to get hands-on testing and reports of your website and app. Competitive Review helps you prefill your Recommended.Systems account with battle cards and radar targets for any competitor you identify.
• All of this is organized through a simple to use Org Manager, which allows you to follow your workflow as you see fit. Want to see all of your Radar scans in one place? Easy. Want to drill down into everything you have on a single competitor? Done.
• We're also going to be launching a public roadmap so that you can see new features we'll be rolling out to you. First on the list is our Performer, which audits your owned web pages for site speed and accessibility.

Why Recommended Systems?
(Introducing the first platform for "Competitive Operations")

“Competitive Operations” (or CompOps if you're cool with DevOps) is a new way of thinking about the roles you need to succeed. We're starting from the recognition that companies with siloed departments perform worse against companies with teams that work together.

Competitive operations brings together sales, marketing, product, and customer success roles into a single "team". The way these roles are defined today, they all tackle a single side of the multi-faceted "competitiveness" puzzle. So by bringing them together, you can shorten the loop between what customers want and what you can deliver to them. We call this cross-team collaboration "Competitive Operations".

Competitive Operations isn't a widely applied practice today because it's not easy to implement:  

• Existing competition-management tools are expensive and thus off limits to all but the largest companies. Without good tooling, manual work is hard to keep up with. It gets delegated to associates and interns (if they're available), or the practice gets dropped.
• Standalone, affordable tools that tackle individual problems exist but there are too many options to sort through and they don't work together. As you keep adding individual tools, your costs and time spent managing them can balloon.

By building tools driven by the Pareto principle (the most value from the fewest features) and by bundling them together, we believe that we can make competitive operations something that any business – large or small, B2B or DTC – can take on and excel through.

Just like Wordpress democratized web publishing and unlocked a flurry of creativity on the web; just like Shopify democratized ecommerce and allowed tens of thousands of new businesses to flourish with few upfront costs; just like Hubspot allowed marketing automation and customer analytics to be an accessible practice for everyone... we believe that Recommended Systems can allow every company to be as competitive as a Fortune 500 company.

8. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this privacy notice.

9. DO CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS HAVE SPECIFIC PRIVACY RIGHTS?

In Short: Yes, if you are a resident of California, you are granted specific rights regarding access to your personal information.

California Civil Code Section 1798.83, also known as the "Shine The Light" law, permits our users who are California residents to request and obtain from us, once a year and free of charge, information about categories of personal information (if any) we disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes and the names and addresses of all third parties with which we shared personal information in the immediately preceding calendar year. If you are under 18 years of age, reside in California, and have a registered account with Services, you have the right to request removal of unwanted data that you publicly post on the Services. Right to request deletion of the data — Request to delete
You can ask for the deletion of your personal information. Verification process
Upon receiving your request, we will need to verify your identity to determine you are the same person about whom we have the information in our system.
